Rei Kawakubo’s long, waist-pinched coats in gray cotton fleece and a plushy white fabric that resembled terry cloth cut an elegant silhouette, but underneath were trousers in gold, a camouflage pattern or jailhouse stripes. Stuck on the models’ orange-dyed heads were wide black headbands, some with gold studs. The rock music was diverting, a typical Kawakubo touch, but the clue was in the soft materials used for the opening looks. A long coat seemingly fashioned from a gray hoodie? A white version over animal-print pants, almost pajamas? Very clever. I couldn’t help but see a big-hearted slacker in his bathrobe. Read more…
