What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?

As I reflect on my time abroad, I find value in acknowledging moments for growth and reflection. One thing I wish I would have done differently during my time abroad is to bring more personal items to donate to the staff in the hospital.

I realized the immense value of contributing to the local community, particularly in the hospital setting and while I was able to donate gloves, masks, and sanitation equipment, I now recognize the potential for an even greater impact by providing additional resources and support to the healthcare facility and its patients. This reflection serves as a valuable lesson for future experiences, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and the positive influence even small gestures can have.

Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.

My days were primarily centered around my involvement in the medical field. I would start by doing rounds in various medical wards, where I had the opportunity to observe, shadow, and actively engage by asking questions and taking detailed notes. This hands-on experience proved invaluable, allowing me to gain practical insights into different medical specialties and procedures.

Following the hospital activities, a significant portion of my time was dedicated to community outreach. This involved traveling to local schools to conduct medical clinics and providing healthcare services to the students and surrounding communities. These interactions allowed me to apply my medical knowledge in a real-world context and establish meaningful connections with the local population.

On alternate days, I dedicated time to language and cultural immersion. I participated in Swahili courses, where I honed my language skills and deepened my understanding of the local culture. Additionally, I had the privilege of attending lectures by knowledgeable staff, covering a wide range of topics that further broadened my perspective on healthcare practices, cultural nuances, and societal dynamics.

What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?

During moments of leisure, I enjoyed exploring the local amenities, particularly the local mall and shopping plaza. These excursions allowed me to immerse myself in the vibrant local culture, interact with residents, and discover unique items that became cherished mementos of my time abroad. One of my free time highlights was venturing to the beach, where I had the pleasure of riding camels along the coastline.

Additionally, I took full advantage of the opportunity to swim in the Indian Ocean, known for its reputed healing properties. The crystal-clear waters and the rejuvenating atmosphere added a therapeutic element to my free time, contributing to both my physical and mental well-being.

The swimming pool on the premises was a nice addition, providing a refreshing retreat after a day of activities. One of the standout features of my stay was the inclusion of a personal chef.

The chef's culinary skills were extraordinary, and I had the pleasure of indulging in delicious meals three times a day. The variety and quality of the dishes not only satisfied my palate but also created a sense of homely comfort during my time away.
